Lindheimer's Muhly. (Muhlenbergia lindheimeri) A native of the Edwards Plateau, big muhly is a beautiful blue-green bunchgrass that grows up to 5′ tall.
The leaf blade is 30 inches long, firm, and usually folded. The leaf sheath is mostly basal and overlapping. The ligule is long, slender, white, pointed, and has a papery membrane that is somewhat hidden in folded blade Lindheimer muhly. Uses. Cattle graze the leaves of Lindheimer’s muhly that remain green during the winter. Horses sometimes choose this grass. It is an indicator of fair range condition.
Muhlenbergia lindheimeri is a heat- and drought-tolerant southwestern native grass that also performs well in the Southeast. It grows in an erect clump; blue gray, fine-textured foliage reaches four feet, and pink-tinted flowers add another foot. It is easy, undemanding, and surprisingly ornamental. Has an upright growth habit and blue/green foliage.
